The Hustle stars two actress’ who have been busy the last few months. Rebel Wilson, who recently starred in “Isn’t It Romantic” (my rating C) and AnneHathaway in the disastrous “Serenity” (my generous rating D+).
Rebel Wilson seems to be the “queen of reimaging”, her term, for remaking or spinning a previous movie. Just as “Isn’t it Romantic” was a spin on “I Feel Pretty”, The Hustle is a spin on 1988’s “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”. If you don’t know the movie, Google it.
Basically, Rebel who plays Penny is a con artist or hustler from NYC who has been running a scam on men. She is known as the “Fake boob job bitch” Not exactly high brow, but she made $500 a con.
As she had become a bit too notorious, she decided she needed a change of environment, which means the South of France of course! As she travels to France via train, Penny comes upon Josephine (Anne Hathaway) a moneyed high society type.
Rebel scams upgraded accommodations and meals from her fellow passengers with stories of her young virgin sister kidnapped by sex traffickers. There is of course, no younger sister or sex traffickers.
Wouldn’t you know, Josephine is a con artist herself, a very successful one and doesn’t want Penny anywhere around her. She attempts to deflect Penny from her home base, but Penny figures it out and is soon begging Josephine to educate her in the ways of the big money con.
With Josephine’s help, Penny ups her game and they are soon trapping wealthy men with the “Hortense the Feral Princess” scam. Very funny actually. Soon, Penny is disillusioned with her role as student, and a bet is made involving an American tech mogul played by Alex Sharp (excellent in his role).
There are plenty of good one liners, “You can’t cheat an honest man” and “Second sisters get sloppy seconds or you die” Josephine describes Penny as “a big titted Russell Crowe” Oh and after one scene, you might think twice about French fries.
There is a twist at the end, which opens the door for a sequel. Not sure if the box office will warrant a sequel though.
it’s nice to see a movie with female leads, and for that reason I am giving “The Hustle” a C—or just average. It would be a good weekday Red Box selection. It’s a bit bland, and wouldn’t
keep you from falling asleep.
