This movie is set in the early 1700’s, period movies really aren’t my thing. But this movie has 3 things going for it. The actresses who portray the main characters. Yes, all the main characters are women, definitely not ordinary casting or script writing. Just as Queen Ann ruled the country, this movie is ruled by women. The main characters are The Queen, Lady Sarah and Abigail, quite a triangle. Lady Sarah, a lifelong friend of the Queen, is basically running the country, with the neurotic, ill Queen glad to not to have to deal with the war against France
Fresh face Abigail arrives at the castle looking for work and a home from her cousin Lady Sarah. Abigail, formerly Lady Abigail was sold off by her late father to settle gambling debts
Abigail is fiercely loyal to her cousin and the Queen, but soon realizes she needs to prioritize her own needs as she misses her former aristocratic life. This sets the stage of a war for the Queen’s affection. Who would be the favorite? Abigail or Lady Sarah?
These women will stop at nothing for Favorite status included poison, making deals with the opposition for troop control, taxing the villagers and a lot of under the sheets activity if you get my drift. The Queen was kept quite busy by both Sarah and Abigail.
The one major disappointment of this film is the ending. I still don’t understand it and we weren’t the only ones. The whole audience was like That’s It? If you’re like me and not into period movies I’d go see this at a matinee. Not worth a premium ticket price. However if you are looking for a movie with empowered women, this is for you. See this on the big screen.
The Favorite is rated B minus. If you don’t see this in the theatre it’s definitely worth a Redbox rental, no coupon code is necessary.
