First, what does Synchronic mean? I’m getting ready for Trivia Night next week so I thought I
should Goggle this; you never know what you might be asked. Synchronic is an adjective, Latin
in origin and means “concerned with something, especially a language, as it exists at one point
in time.” What do I get from this? NOTHING…. I’m still confused and hope this doesn’t come
up at Trivia Night.
Now Synchronic the movie, is much more understandable and enjoyable. Our main characters
are Steve and Dennis, lifelong friends who are EMT’s in New Orleans. Dennis who is semi-
happily married with a one- and eighteen-year-old, and Steve a serial dater, commitment
phobic who blurts out random facts and knowledge, a Trivia savant of sorts.
Dennis and Steve’s EMT calls are getting more bizarre and gruesome, victims stabbed with mid
evil weapons and people killing themselves in the strangest manner. Steve notices an empty
designer drug wrapper, named Synchronic, at the scenes of these calls and decides to
investigate the source of the drugs. Dennis is too busy dealing with family issues of his own
making which includes his eldest daughter is now missing while attending a party where
Synchronic was being used.
Steve has a lot on his plate also, as he was just diagnosed with an inoperable terminal brain
tumor. Steve wants to do something good with what is left of his life, and decides to buy up all
the Synchronic he can find to save others from injury and killing themselves.
This is where we have a good twist to the storyline, when the creator of the designer drug
breaks into Steve’s apartment to steal the drugs he purchased. The ensuing conversation and
realization of the drug’s capabilities, really opens the storyline.
I don’t want to give anything way, but Steve’s journey after discovering the power of the drug
covers thousands of years of human history, some heartwarming and some that though
decades in the past, are relevant today.
This movie covers a lot of bases thriller, fantasy, science fiction, mystery, and a great buddy
movie. Better yet, you really understand the ending, there is no guessing or pondering what
was the writer/director really trying to say. And at the end you actually understand the
definition of Synchronic.
Synchronic, an easy hour and forty-minute watch, is rated a solid B. How I missed this gem in
2019 is a mystery, I don’t even remember a trailer for it.
As for a beverage how about Faubourg Lager, an easy drinking lager from New Orleans, but
since I couldn’t find it anywhere outside of Louisiana, I suggest your favorite local craft beer.
