"Smallfoot" Mom's Rating: B/C+

Updated: Nov 20, 2018

Thanks to our trusty MoviePass we've seen over 30 movies this year, which means we've seen a lot of movie trailers. They have been playing the trailer for Smallfoot for months and I was intrigued.

Though not a fan of animated movies, Smallfoot looked like it wasn't too Disney-ish or so sugary sweet that it would put me into a diabetic coma. But the first 5-7 minutes had me very worries. The movie starts with a town filled with families of Yetis singing and dancing. I thought "This is going to be a long 90 minutes" I"m not naming names, but someone in the seat next to me started to doze off. Bad signs all around. Where was the funny movie from the trailer?

Eight minutes in and things changed for the better. This was obviously a kid movies (we were the only people without a child). But it tells a story that mirrors today's issues. Fear of repeating past problens, closing the door to new ideas, never questioning the status quo. As the heroine Yet said "It's not about tearing down the old ideas, it's about finding new ones."

The current leaders mantra is "it's best to let it lie" and "Curiosity killed the Yak"One of the Yeti's stones (think 10 commandments) is "Ignorance is bliss."Of course there is kid humor lines. The sun is called smail because it rises slowly. A roll of toiler paper is found by the Yetis and is called "the scroll of invisible wisdom." Yetis believe they "fell out of the butt of the great sky Yak."

The whole premise of this movie is the Yeti AKA Bigfood is trying to prove the existence of humans AKA Smallfoot and visa versa. When Yeti and humans meet everything is great until the fears of the past lead to lies and oppression. This being a kids movie, everyone makes friends, communications and curiosity wins and we have a meshed society of humans and Yeti living today in harmony. Ok the ending got me close to that sugary diabetic coma but the credits came on and I was saved and no one feel asleep. I've decided to rate this movie two ways. If going with children, it's a solid B. The kids in the audience were laughing and seemed to enjoy it immensly. For adults, Smallfoot is rated C+. If animated movies are your deal, I encourage you to see this on the big screen. If animated movies are not your thing, I doubt you will see this either at the movies or via Redbox which would be your loss. It's refreshing to see a kids movie tackling issues so relevant to today.
