I do like a movie based on real life and this is quite the story. Based in 1962 this movie tells the story of two polar opposite men, who thru an eight week road trip, become life long friends.
Tony, a white, lower middle class working stiff from the Bronx is employed as a driver for Dr Don Shirley, a brilliant pianist who is embarking on an eight week tour of middle America and the Deep South. Did I mention Dr Shirley is African American?
And it’s 1962
and it’s the Deep South
And a white man is driving a black man
In a Cadillac
I think you have the picture.
The movie begins with 2 black workers making repairs in Tonys kitchen. He is appalled when his wife gives the men glasses of water. Tony actually takes the glasses and throws them out. Can you spell bigot! Tony is out of work and money is tight he is recommended for a driver job which is when he meets Dr Shirley. This is quite the scene, which I will not give away but Tony gets an education.
After some bargaining, Tony accepts the job, and this is where we are introduced to The Green Book. The Green Book is a book that actually existed, it is a travel book for negros. Thru out their eight weeks together there were hotels Tony and the Dr both could stay on and other city’s that the dr. would not be allowed
It is amazing Dr Shirley would be applauded and idolized by the culture seeking white audiences but in the same hand be told he would have to use the outhouse because the indoor bathroom was for whites only. This is movie about racism discrimination and retaining ones dignity in adversity. Tony wonders why the tour? Why put yourself in this awful situation when you could be making tons of money staying in NYC in the comfort of Carnegie Hall!
You will know the answer to these questions when you get yourself to the theatre and see this movie
There is an obvious comparison between the men’s relationship and how they came to find friendship. As you see hope for a less radically divided future. So glad this amazing story was told.
The Green Book is a solid B plus!!!’ Really go see this you won’t be disappointed
