Yes, you read it right, in 3D. I was missing my partner in viewing (the hubby) so I decided to splurge and go big with 3D. It is a movie about Godzilla, you have to upgrade.
First, a glimpse into suburban life for all my big city readers. Picture this, a 10:10am (yes AM) showing in 3D, I’m the only person in the theatre, and I paid $6.00!!! You probably pay $6.00 for a bottle of water at the theatre in NYC. Just saying, the suburban life isn’t all-bad.
Okay, on to the review. Apparently, there was a previous Godzilla movie, because it seems like this begins right where a prior movie ends, in a destroyed San Francisco and a family desperately searching for their son. We quickly ramp up to present day, Mom (Emma) and daughter (Maddie) are together, but Dad is emailing Maddie pictures of wolves (he’s a photographer?) and we find, their son, poor Andrew was killed in San Francisco.
There is an organization, Monarch Initiative, that is trying to protect the Titans (Godzilla, Mothra etc). The Titans, older than dinosaurs, have been hibernating but are now awakening in response to humans spoiling the environment with pollution, atomic and nuclear testing and mining to name a few. They agree there are some bad Titans, but they also feel there are benevolent ones that we can co-exist with.
Emma and Maggie are at a Monarch facility in China that has been waiting for Mothra to awaken. Just as Mothra is emerging from her “egg” the facility is overrun by a squad of eco terrorists, lead by Colonel Alan Jonah.
This is when we find out Mark (the Dad) and Emma are both doctors who worked for Monarch. They separated after the death of their son, Dad started taking photos of Wolves in the wilderness, but Mom stayed with Monarch, wanting something positive to come of Andrew’s death.
Mom has developed something called Orca, which uses Bioacoustics to control the Titans. We later find out Emma is working with the eco-terrorists to unleash all the Titans to correct the imbalance of the world. Emma believes humans have been dominating/destroying the world, and that the original and rightful rulers, The Titans, should be back in power. She also believes humans are an infection of the world and a balance must be restored leading to a co-existence with the the Titans, the first gods.
Yes, you got it, Mom is bat shit crazy.
Next thing you know, Emma and the terrorists are in Antarctica, trying to awaken Monster Zero, aka Ghidorah. Ghidorah is the only hope in knocking off the current King of the Titans, Godzilla. Whoever is the King of the Titans, rules all the newly awakening Titans, and Godzilla is apparently too easy going a Titan. Ghidorah is a real bad-ass who will rally up the troops so the speak, and take over Earth and get rid of the infection known as humans.
Fun fact: Godzilla is King of the Titans, but Mothra is the Queen.
So all the regulars are here, Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan and the three-headed Ghidorah, along with a female Japanese doctor, who I believe is related to the Mothra singing twins of the old Japanese Godzilla movies.
With the current CGI capabilities, I thought the Titans would look more realistic. But, I understand the campiness (my word) of the Godzilla movies. They couldn’t really totally trick out a CGI Godzilla, it just wouldn’t be right. We need Godzilla and crew stomping on large metropolitan cites and knocking over skyscrapers like dominoes, it’s tradition.
It took a bit to adjust to the 3D, but half way in I decided this is the only way to see this movie.
There is a point where the movie starts to veer off tangent into a religious slant. One scene shows a giant crucifix in the ruins of a city. There is also a bit of creationism going on also.
Godzilla King of the Monsters is mindless fun, I didn’t put much thought into the religious symbolism, and I thought it was misplaced.
Splurge and see this movie in 3D, it’s a hoot. Our favorite Titan is rated B minus.
