"Creed 2" Mom's Rating: B

Creed 2 is the latest chapter in the “Rocky” universe. Here’s the Cliff Notes(is that even still around?) version of the Rocky/Creed relationship. Rocky and Apollo Creed, once competitors for the heavyweight championship, develop a mutual respect and friendship for each other. Apollo is killed in the ring fighting Russian Ivan Drago in 1985, dying in Rocky’s arms. Looking to avenge Apollo’s death, Rocky travels to Russia to fight Ivan. And in Russia, Rocky knocks him out in the last round. USA!!!

Rocky is now the trainer of Apollo’s son, Adonis who is now the heavyweight champion. They have a father and son relationship though Rocky has no relationship with his own son, and has never met his grandson. The years have not been kind to Rocky, he is of course older but wiser and so sentimental. The scene at Adrian’s grave is so honest.

Ok, back to the plot. Flash to present day Ukraine and Ivan is training his mini me son Viktor, and this guy is an animal and you can pretty much guess what’s coming next. Creed vs Drago version 2.0. I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. Boxing is a subplot of this movie, the main storyline is loss, relationships, insecurity, respect and facing the responsibilities of family. Another surprise is the Drago family plot. We aren’t suppose to care about Drago and his mini me, but the backstory of their path since Ivan’s loss to Rocky in 1985, is a reminder of the severity of the Russian Politburo

Not giving anymore away, this is a movie that needs to be seen at the theatre, Redbox will not do it justice. FYI could not believe Dolph Lundgren reprised his role of Ivan along with Brigitte Nielsen as his Russian Amazonian wife Ludmilla. They have not aged in 30 years!!!

Creed 2 is a solid B. Go see this movie! It’s a TKO.
