"Avengers: Endgame" Mom's Rating: A-

As a reader of my reviews, you are hopefully aware of my favorite genres. Movies based on real life situations and good science fiction (so hard to find) are my preferred choices. Towards the bottom of my “likes” are movies based on comic book characters. Now, I did see Aquaman (my rating C+) but that was in the dark days of Movie Pass and not a lot was available.

I want you to know I did my research before attending Endgame. I had no idea there were twenty-two movies in the Avengers series. I wasn’t going to watch all twenty-two, but we did see the previous Avenger movie “Infinity War” and “Ant Man and the Wasp” via Netflix.

I also learned Aquaman is part of DC Comics, and the Avengers are from Marvel. Marvel holds a larger share of the comic book biz and more successful box office wise. I’m no WAPO but I tried to do my research.

On to the movie, which begins right where Infinity War ends, half the inhabitants of the universe are “dusting” away. Many of the people who were erased by Thanos were family members of the Avengers and some Avengers themselves. I thought everyone knew everyone else, but apparently the Avengers didn’t know the Guardians of the Galaxy. Loved Tony Stark’s reaction to Rocket Raccoon, “Up until now I thought you were a build a bear”

It’s five years after the event, and Earth and the remaining Avengers are not doing well. Some have broken away and on their own, and others are trying to keep it together. A depressed Black Widow laments “I get emails from a raccoon, nothing is crazy anymore.”

The remaining Avengers and company decides to attempt a “Time Heist” to reverse Thanos’ attack on the universe. I will admit right now, movies with a plot of moving back and forth thru time, tend to confuse me. And when David Banner explains how events can and cannot change in time travel, he sealed the deal on my confusion. But he also confused most of the remaining Avengers who commented, “You mean Back to the Future was bullshit?”

So, they round up the old gang and go back in time with the objective of gathering all six of the infinity stones, bringing them back to current time, and reversing the death of half the universe.

I’m not going to give anything away, but the task of collecting all the stones is costly, and as a novice viewer, gave me insight into how some became Avengers. The final battle scene, fighting for the newly completed Infinity stone glove, was crazy. I have no idea who many of the characters were, but it seemed if you were ever in a Marvel comic book, you were in that scene.

It was surprising how fast three hours and one minute flies by. But, I can’t get through a two-hour movie without a bathroom break, so here’s a tip. When you see “New Jersey” about half way thru, it’s safe to take a quick break. Now, I know you will be surprised at this rating but here it is.

Avengers: Endgame is rated A minus.

Just because it’s not my genre, doesn’t mean it’s not a good movie. It has a lot of subplots that show the human side of these super heroes. We see depression fromloss of family and purpose. We see Gamora and Nebula fighting for their abusive father’s attention, Thor totally distancing himself from his former self, and Captain America’s decision, which changes his life forever.

And that’s where the A minus comes in. David Banner went into this whole rant about changing time. What Captain America did, changed the timeline, and I am confused about that. If he changed his life, why can’t there be a change for Black Widow? And speaking of Black Widow, when Captain America went back to replace all the stones (you’ll understand this when you see the movie) why didn’t that help Black Widow? And why just send Captain America to replace all the stones? They needed to be replaced exactly how they were taken, shouldn’t the Avenger who took each individual stone of been charged with returning it? I’m sure all these issues will be answered in the next movie, which I will probably go see. Yes, I did enjoy this movie but not enough to watch all twenty-two leading up to Endgame. I do have limits.

Go see Avengers: Endgame you will enjoy it. There is an audio clip at the end of the EXTREMELY long credits. The clip is non-verbal, but I have my thoughts what it means. I’m sure you will also.
