I can’t believe we actually went to see this movie. We are so close to reaching our goal of seeing 52 movies by the end of our MoviePass subscription. FYI this movie brings us to 50 movies to date!!!
Let me preface this review by stating I have never seen an Avenger movie, never sat through a complete Spiderman. I said no to Black Panther, Captain America and Wonder Woman. I have seen parts of some version of Iron Man and Michael Keaton’s Batman. Seeing this movie was nearly two and a half hours long OMG I was really taking one for the team to get over on MoviePass.
Now on to the review-- You know going into this type of movie, this is not Oscar material and of course the storyline is based on a comic book. So let’s not question how citizens of the lost city of Atlantis, who live UNDERWATER, can live just fine on land. To the extreme of surviving just fine in the SAHARA DESERT. They don’t even need a spritz once in awhile. I can understand how Aquaman (aka Arthur by landlubbers)would be fine out of water. He’s a hybrid (not a Prius kind of hybrid) his father is a Lighthouse keeper and his mother an Atlantian who washed up on the rocks. But all those full time citizens of Atlantis? I don’t know. Also FYI Atlantians can jump out of planes, fly thru the air and roll to a perfect landing. Best yet, Aquaman and Princess Mera (there is always a princess) battle Atlantis’ version of Storm Troopers in Sicily in what can only be described as a rip off of a James Bond scene.
How do they travel from the US to Sicily to the Sahara? They swim part of it, but there is a boat and a plane too, what is Mera’s passport home country? Is it waterproof? Wait, let me slap myself for thinking too much.... The plot is predictable from the submarine attack (was it really?) to the reported death of Aquaman’s mother (key word reported). Also, Princess Mera’s bright red hair is a carbon copy of Ariel’s in Little Mermaid. It worked for Ariel because she was animated, but we all know the red hair wouldn’t last in salt water Princess Mera!!! Why does this bother me so much?
All that being said this movie is still entertaining, quick paced and at times Aquaman is a bit of a swashbuckling Errol Flynn. I know you’ll have to google “who is Errol Flynn?” Jason Momoa (Arthur/Aquaman) does well with the comedic timing of his character. The talented supporting cast includes Nicole Kidman as Aquaman’s Mother, Willen Defoe, Dolph Lundgren and Amber Heard (with Ariel’s hair).
Aquaman is rated C+. Movies in this genre make a lot of money, their fan base is large and very loyal. If this is your type of movie, you’ve probably seen it already...at least once. If you are wishy washy about seeing this now or waiting for Redbox, go to a $6 morning matinee as this is best seen on a large screen . FYI stay for the credits, there is already a trailer for the sequel towards the end of the credits.
